Denmark's Strategic Effort for Artificial Intelligence¶
The Danish Ministry of Digitalisation has published a national strategy for artificial intelligence — Strategisk indsats for kunstig intelligens — outlining Denmark's ambitions and priorities for AI development and adoption. The strategy identifies four key initiatives, and Danish Foundation Models is directly at the heart of the third.
The strategy reflects a growing recognition that AI is becoming foundational infrastructure for modern society, and that smaller nations must act deliberately to shape how this technology develops and is governed within their borders. It identifies four strategic priorities:
- AI as a driver of growth and welfare — leveraging AI to strengthen the Danish economy and public sector
- A strong AI ecosystem — supporting research, talent development, and the growth of Danish AI companies
- Danish language and culture in the AI age — ensuring that Danish language, values, and cultural heritage are represented in AI systems, and that Denmark has access to AI infrastructure built for Danish needs rather than adapted from systems designed for larger markets
- Trustworthy and responsible AI — establishing frameworks for safe, transparent, and ethically sound AI deployment
Danish Foundation Models is directly aligned with initiative three. Our work to develop open, well-documented, and high-quality Danish language models supports the national ambition of ensuring that Denmark has access to AI infrastructure that reflects Danish language, values, and needs.
The publication of a national AI strategy is an important signal that investment in Danish language AI is not just a research priority, but a strategic one for Danish society as a whole.
